Sadeta
Sadeta Zahirovic- Laub is from Bosnia. She has lived in Vermont for two years and has been working with her volunteer teacher, Winnie McCormick, for almost a year and a half. Sadeta’s goal to improve her English has been the focus of their weekly meetings at the Barre Learning Center. Each lesson has included conversations around topics of interest to Sadeta which led Sadeta to talk about her rug hooking craft. As her lessons have progressed, Sadeta has felt more confident in speaking in her community and at home.
The following conversation between Winnie (W) and Sadeta (S) was written down, recorded, read and reread multiple times as a vehicle for Sadeta’s ongoing study of English.
W----When did you learn hooking?
S----Helen Wolfel, my daughter’s mother-in-law, taught me.
W----Where do you buy your material?
S----Helen brought me wool material and a hook table.
W----What are you working on now?
S----I’m working on a small rug.
W----Is your project a Christmas present?
S----No, I go shopping at Christmas.
W----What else do you like to do in your leisure time?
S----I like to listen to opera and to watch a good movie. A good opera
singer is Pavarotti. |
