Enriching Our Community Through Literacy

Frances

Frances Hill is a life-long resident of Morrisville who takes part in CVABE’s basic education programs.   Frances had to leave school in the 6th grade to work. She is now gaining basic reading and writing skills that she was unable to achieve as a youth.

Frances is delighted to be reading more each day.  Carrying a bag full of books, she explains, “I can’t pick a favorite.  I love all of my books.”

As she learns writing skills, Frances is applying them in wonderful ways.  She stays up late at night writing and revising poetry.  In addition, Frances cares deeply about the Morrisville community, and she recently wrote an editorial to the local newspaper about a creative way to improve her home town.

“I saw all of these abandoned buildings,”said Frances, “and I wanted to see something done that would benefit the community.”  She wrote in her editorial, “I would propose that something useful be done with these buildings to help the elderly of this town, possibly a soup kitchen or apartments.  There are people without homes that could be helped if these buildings were renovated into housing for elderly.”

Frances’s editorial has increased local residents’ awareness of this issue.  As her reading and writing skills continue to grow, so does her community activism.  She continues to speak out for positive changes and does her part to help others by serving as a volunteer with CVABE and with River Arts.

As Frances says, “Now that I’ve gotten started, I’m never going to stop.”
