Studying for a GED
(high school equivalency)

The GED (General Educational Development) tests are a series of 5 tests that are nationally recognized as a high school equivalency.  Any one who is 16 years or older and not currently enrolled in school may take the GED tests, although any one 16-18 years of age must have a parent’s or a guardian's permission to take the GED tests.

Each of the five GED tests costs $15.00 (a total of $75.00 for the total examination).

CVABE offers confidential, individualized tutoring to help students build the skills and strategies needed to pass each part of the GED test. Practice tests are available free of charge so students can prepare for the testing environment.

Tutoring and practice testing takes place at the student's convenience.  The CVABE Learning Centers have computer versions of the GED tests and software to help a student prepare for the tests.  Official GED testing is carefully monitored.  Testing dates are scheduled for Barre, Morrisville, Waterbury, Randolph, and Bradford.  This schedule is widely publicized.  Typically it takes three testing sessions, or about seven hours, to complete the GED tests that cover these areas:

  • Writing Skills: the student writes a 200 word essay on a specified topic and answers multiple-choice questions about grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Social Studies: there are readings and related multiple-choice questions covering US history, economics, geography, political science, and the behavioral sciences.
  • Science: basic principles of biology, earth science, chemistry, and physics are covered, including interpretation of graphs, charts, and maps.
  • Literature and Arts: the student is given a variety of readings — poetry, fiction, drama, and prose - and multiple-choice questions about their form, structure and meaning.
  • Mathematics: the student must solve a variety of problems — arithmetic (50%), algebra (30%), and geometry (20%) and interpretation of charts, graphs, and diagrams is included.  Calculators and other mechanical aids are not permitted.

To pass the GED, a student must score a minimum of 225 points or get an average of 45 points on each test.  The minimum passing score for a test is 40.  A test must be retaken if this score is not achieved. Upon completion of the GED tests, the student receives a high school equivalency certificate issued by the Vermont Department of Education.
