Who We Are

We are multi-cuiltural students from different countries. One woman, Therese, is from French-speaking Canada. Another woman, Sarinthip, is from Thailand. Also a couple, Malani and Jayasena, are from Sri Lanka.

Therese is here because she met her companion here, and would like to improve communication and participate more in the community.

Sarinthip is here because she has time to work on English and she needs to make new friends from other countries.

Jayasena and Malani are here to give their son a good education, and learn to use new technology here in the learning center.

My English Class
Before I came to CVABE I had very little English knowledge. I always I felt I didn’t know how to speak the English language and I didn’t have enough English words to speak with others. I had trouble with pronunciation. Sometimes it was difficult to understand people’s pronunciation.
When I work I must be able speak English with my co-workers. But when I come home automatically I speak my language with my husband and son.  Then I came to CVABC and met the teachers. I was very nervous and excited. I told them I needed to add more English words to my vocabulary. I came to English class every Thursday.
After one year, I now feel my English knowledge is developing well. But I must have more practice reading, writing and speaking in English.
In addition I have two classmates named Aoi and Theresa. I feel like they are my sisters. And also teachers are my parents. It means, “The English Class is one part of my family life.”

My English Class
The first day I came to English class I was really nervous and excited. After two or three classes, l felt my English had improved. I like to learn English writing and reading and communication. I like to recognize everybody and discuss with them about their culture and I like class relationships. Now I can speak English and I understand English words and some communication.  I speak English at work every day. I like my English class.

My English Lessons

When I started at CVABE I was very nervous and anxious. I didn’t know what would happen.  I had some questions for the teachers, about the students who would be learning with me in class. For me, my English language was not so good. Now I like to come to my lessons; I like my teachers very well. I like my fellow students. It is not just a class; it is also a good time to spend with some friends.
I like to learn with people who have lived in different countries. In my everyday life I read much more than before. When I go to different places (bank, grocery, pharmacy) I am not nervous to ask for what I need.
My companion, Leo, congratulates me all the time for my progress. I have some problems with my memory and learning grammar is difficult. But I am very happy with what I have learned during the time I have gone to school.

When I First Started at CVABE
The first time I came to CVABE my English was not good. I could read but I didn’t know the vocabulary to speak. Sometimes I wanted to speak more but I didn’t know how to explain my thoughts to everybody especially my husband.
I needed to work on grammar and more speaking.
I felt nervous and excited but not scared. At that time I worked at the Thai Restaurant as a waitress. I needed to talk with the customers, but sometime I didn’t understand what the customers needed when they asked for something. Some customers were very nice when I didn’t understand; they said to me, “Never mind” or “It’s okay”. But some customers were upset when I couldn’t get something that they needed.
I often spoke English when I moved to Morrisville because in Stowe I didn’t speak English too much. I spoke English when I went to the Bank, the Post office and shopping.

Now!
I think my English is better now than it was two years ago. And I’m glad to have lovely friends from Sri-Lanka, Canada, Chili, etc. We like a family. We share some food and learn to give and take from each other. And now I am not scared to talk with people. I can read, write, and speak better than before I came to CVABE.
The best thing is that I have three very good teachers who teach me and are willing to listen and help me when I have problems.
Thank you teacher

MY DANCE CLASS
Last week I started teaching a dance class at River Arts Center in Morrisville. Before I got there I thought nobody would come to my dance class, only, Aoi and my husband. At about 4:20p.m. one by one people came to the class. I was very happy. Ten adult women and two little girls came to class.
Then I began the class. First I did a prayer for them.  Then I did the exercises one by one until the 4th exercise. I tried teaching them as best as I could.  Actually, they did the exercises as well as I thought they would. At the end of the class they appreciated me and everybody went home, looking forward to next week’s class.
