New Home in Montpelier

Central Vermont Adult Basic Education has been offering free instruction for Montpelier adults and teens for over 40 years.  For over ten years CVABE had utilized classroom space at 58 Barre Street for its Montpelier Learning Center.  On December 14, 2009, fire damaged the building which also housed the Montpelier Senior Activity Center and Community Connection Offices.  CVABE, along with the other tenants, was forced to find other accommodations.  For years the Kellogg-Hubbard Library had graciously opened its space to our volunteer tutors and their students.  After the fire they didn’t hesitate to offer temporary space for our teacher / community coordinator, Emily MacFadyen, to use as an office.  Thanks to the library’s generosity CVABE was able to continue services to Montpelier students without interruption.

On February 1, 2010, CVABE moved into new space at 59 Elm Street, on the corner of School and Elm across from the Uncommon Market, and hung temporary signs in the window announcing the location and services.  Even before the permanent signs were hung, the new visibility on the busy corner started drawing potential students and volunteers from the passersby.  Volunteers continue to meet students in their homes, at the library and in other community locations as they have always done in an effort to meet students’ individual needs.  The learning center at 59 Elm Street serves a central hub for adult basic education in Montpelier.  It is staffed by a full time teacher / community coordinator.  Besides providing classroom space, the center also provides activities for volunteers including orientations, trainings, and a support group.  The next orientation will be held on Tuesday, April 13, from 5 – 6 p.m.
